The day before my birthday,May 30th, and again we were up early. We got up at 6am,settled our bill and went to catch the bus to Siem Reap in Cambodia. We were talking to the ladies in the tour office about our visa for Cambodia. They told us that it would cost 25 usd,but this was not what the Cambodian government's website said. We decided to check when we got to the border.
Before we got to the border our tour guide told us about the border procedures and explained that the visa was 25 usd, we asked why after what we had read on the government website. He explained that it was because he did the visa procedure for us, so I decided that I would do my own. Having a passport photo and taking a 30 second walk with our guide saved me 5 usd and I didn't have to complete the health declaration form. Cool!
We got to Phnom Penh and had to wait for the next bus to Siem Reap. It had taken us about 5 hours already and we were looking at another 5 hours. But the ride had only cost us 18 usd, so who am I to complain. We got on the next bus and I was a bit worried as there was no toilet but no need, after about 90 minutes we made our first stop and I got my first look at the local delicacies, fired crickets and tarantulas. If I had been hungry, that would have changed my mind!!
We arrived in Sieam Reap and it was dark. As soon as we got off the bus we were surrounded by tuk tuk drivers wanting to take us to their cousins wife's,younger brother's girlfriends guest house. But Betsy and I had been really good on this trip and we generally we always had somewhere booked. So we got a "free" tuk tuk to our guesthouse,I was greeted by name as we arrived and we settled down to dinner and beer. It had been another successful day and tomorrow would be my birthday. I would be 32, again!!!!
