Chrissie and I caught a cab to the hostel as it was across town from the bus station and she had a lot of luggage. She had a reservation and I didn't, but I wasn't too worried about that. And I was right, they had space for me. We settled in and then went for a late lunch, literally just around the corner we found a Japanese restaurant and had lunch. The food was great and the beer even better. I was beginning to feel more human. We then went for a wander around town, I have to say that there doesn't seem to be much in Vancouver. At first glance it is not as interesting as Seattle and I knew that I would have no problem in leaving the city. We went back to the hostel, I spent some time on the computer and had an early night!
Monday morning I wandered around town again, ran a few errands and as is my wont these days went to the public library. The building is interesting, it kind of looks like the Colosseum in Rome, I didn't go in. I was all up to date on my computer errands. I checked out of the hostel about 2pm and walked down to the light transit rail station, I was going to Victoria on Vancouver Island to see Nik and James. The ferry says that it goes from Vancouver but the ferry terminal is about twenty miles from downtown and requires a trip by rail and then a change onto a 45 minute bus ride. Since I hadn't planned my trip I had to wait to make some connections and I caught the 5pm ferry to Swartz Bay. Surprise surprise the ferry doesn't actually go to Victoria but is a fifty minute bus ride away. Luckily when I arrived in Swartz Bay there was a bus waiting and it was a cheap bus fare. I finally arrived in Victoria about 8pm having travelled a combined distance of about sixty miles. It's times like these when I wish my budget wasn't so constrained. I know I should relish the travel experience etc. but really, six hours to travel sixty miles. Just as well I knew that I had somewhere to stay that night!!
It was more luck then judgement that I got off at the right stop and walked the few blocks to Nik and James's house. I set down my bag and they had a beer ready for me. I knew I was going to like Victoria.
